Overview

SpellYourName ("we," "our," or "the site") is a free tool that generates mnemonic sentences from first names. We are committed to respecting your privacy. This policy explains what limited data we collect and how we use it.

Data We Collect

  • Names you enter: The first names or words you type are sent to our server, processed by AI (Google Gemini), and stored in our database as cached results — so other users looking up the same name get an instant result. We do not associate cached names with your identity.
  • Hashed IP addresses: To enforce fair-use rate limits, we store a one-way cryptographic hash (SHA-256) of your IP address alongside each generation request. Generation records contain the hash rather than the raw IP address. Our hosting infrastructure may also process IP addresses in server access logs.
  • Outbound click events: When you click a product link, we log the product type, name key, and theme (no personal data). This helps us understand which products users find most relevant.
  • Analytics: We may use a privacy-friendly analytics tool (such as Plausible or Google Analytics) to understand aggregate traffic. These tools may collect anonymized data such as page views, referrers, and country-level location. No cookies that track you across sites are set by us.

Data We Do NOT Collect

  • Your name, email address, or any account information — we have no accounts.
  • Payment information — all purchases are handled entirely by Printify.
  • Precise location data.
  • Device fingerprints or cross-site tracking identifiers.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services, each with their own privacy policies:

  • Google (Gemini API): Generates mnemonic text and AI art images (opt-in). Name inputs are sent to Google's API. See Google's Privacy Policy.
  • Supabase: Our database and storage provider. Hosted on AWS.
  • Printify: Handles all print-on-demand orders. When you click a product link, you leave our site and are subject to Printify's Privacy Policy.

Cookies

We set a first-party cookie called syn_visitor containing a random, signed identifier that expires after 30 days. It distinguishes browsers for fair-use generation limits, including browsers sharing the same network. We store a hash of this identifier with generation requests. It is not used for advertising or cross-site tracking. Clearing cookies resets the browser identifier; network limits still apply.

Data Retention

Cached mnemonic results are stored indefinitely to serve them instantly to future users. Rate-limit request records older than 24 hours are removed when new generation requests are checked. Separate generation and click logs are retained for service operations and cost tracking.
